School Tour - The Lost Hat

Sarah, author and creator of the Kitty + Custard Club, is thrilled to be back in front of children, teachers, and their families in 2023!

 Hi, I'm Sarah Milne. 

I grew up in a music-loving home in South Wales, UK. From the age of three, I began performing in musicals at local theatres. Later on, I trained at The Bird College of Performing Arts as a professional dancer and singer, and I performed in many theatres throughout my professional career.

Despite my love of theatre, I also felt that my vocation was in teaching. So, I studied to become a nursery teacher, hoping to combine my love of performance with my love of teaching children. My wish was soon granted when I successfully opened my own dance studio and live events program. I'm happy to say I now run my dance school, where I teach over 150 students per year using my technical training and the original content I've created to be The Kitty + Custard Club.

With the universal language of music, I hope to bring wellness, self-love, and embrace of everyone's inner hero to all the kids' hearts that are touched by Kitty, Custard, and all their Primrose Park friends.

How It Got Started

 Inspired by the way dance changed her own life, and concerned by the lack of performing arts education in preschools, Sarah crafted a children’s series that promotes using dance to marry self-confidence, laughter, and wellness. Out of this mission, The Lost Hat was born.

The Kitty + Custard Club quickly grew into more than just a book series. Writing and choreographing hundreds of original songs and dances, Sarah built an immersive world of make-believe and movement that would inspire countless kids in her local area to have fun, make friends, and stay fit.

As the Kitty + Custard Club continues to expand and evolve, Sarah hopes to reach educators and parents worldwide and inspire them to model wellness, self-love, and compassion for children in their classrooms and homes.

 Kid's Wellness, Technology, and the Language of Music 

Kitty + Custard Club believes that stagnant kids are unhealthy kids, but also recognizes that trying to remove technology is a futile endeavor. Most likely, these young generations will only grow up with ever-increasing amounts of technology in their lives. Instead of prying our kids away from their screens, as many other movements suggest, Sarah proposes that we offer resources to kids through their devices that promote wellness.

In addition, Sarah believes the best way to get kids to focus on learning and mature properly is to give them a proper outlet for their energy. Adding structured movement to their daily routines can help channel the fidgeting towards fitness and build back the attention span that has been so severely diminished.

To bring wellness to children on their devices, Kitty + Custard Club offers an immersive world of books, animations, songs, and dances. Instead of prying them away from their screens, educators and parents can get kids to move with their screens. This appropriate channel for children’s energy can help classrooms and home environments function properly again.

Sarah believes that dance is a universal language that brings laughter, self-confidence, and fitness together. The Kitty + Custard Club celebrates this language of movement and song with the diverse characters that deliver it. Educators, parents, and kids can all read the Kitty + Custard series books and follow along to Sarah’s animated song and dance videos.

The Lost Hat

The Kitty + Custard Club world is built on a foundation of books, starting with The Lost Hat. In this book, we are introduced to Kitty and Custard, the main characters, who are cheeky cats living in Primrose Park. When Kitty finds a hat that’s been left at the park gate, she embarks on an adventure to find the owner, singing and dancing with friends she meets along the way.

Most groundbreaking is Sarah's innovation to pair the physical book with interactive online content, making the Club a multimedia experience. Read the book, learn the songs and dances, and then move and groove along with Sarah and all the characters!

The original edition of The Lost Hat can be bought on Amazon, and the newest edition is now available on the website. Several more books of the series are currently in production, addressing themes like learning how to play sports and focusing on mindfulness and meditation.
